Covid-19 : Getting To Know The Uninvited Guest

It spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Or discharge from the nose, or through droplets of saliva while talking. Infection may also happen by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face.

What Is Covid19?

Covid-19 is a disease that is caused by a new strain of coronavirus.
It is named SARS-CoV-2, first reported to emerge in Wuhan, China in late December 2019.
It has since spread across the world and the World Health Organisation (WHO) has initially declared a global public health emergency and later a pandemic in March 2020.
Many countries have imposed lockdowns and travel restrictions due to their severity.

Symptoms of COVID-19

This virus can cause illnesses such as common cold and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
Its common symptoms including fever, tiredness and dry cough.
Some patients may also experience shortness of breath, sore throat and general aches and pains.
Evidence has been found that a loss of taste or smell, diarrhoea, nausea or a runny nose could also be a symptom of the disease.
While most people have mild symptoms, some patients develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Transmission Of Covid-19

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the virus spreads when people are in close proximity.
It spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
Or discharge from the nose, or through droplets of saliva while talking. Infection may also happen by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their face.
People are most infectious when they start to show symptoms.
They remain infectious for an estimated seven to fourteen days.
Some people are infected with the virus but do not develop noticeable symptoms at any point in time (asymptomatic).
And some have very mild symptoms (paucisymptomatic), both can also spread the virus.

As of now, there are still no specific treatments such as vaccines for the coronavirus. 

But, most symptoms that are caused by the virus can be treated. However, several proposed antiviral treatments and vaccines for Covid-19 are currently in the experimental phase.

The WHO suggested the following as part of preventive measures;

  • Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness to avert infections.
  • Physical distancing.
  • Wearing a face mask in public places.
  • Washing of hands regularly.
  • Covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
  • Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
  • Sanitizing of frequently touched surfaces as recommended or required by regulation for businesses and public facilities.
  • After the implementation of social distancing and stay-at-home orders, many countries have been able to sustain an effective transmission rate.

Management Of Covid-19

COVID‑19 can affect the upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, and throat) and the lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs).
Management and treatment recommendation consists of supportive care. These treatments may include intravenous fluid, hydrogen-oxygen therapy to address the issue of respiratory failure, and supporting other affected vital organs.
Severe cases will require mechanical ventilation or alternatives. Supportive treatments may be useful in those with mild symptoms at the early stage of infection.
Taking over-the-counter cold medications like Paracetamol, drinking fluids, and resting may help alleviate the symptoms.

Covid-19 patients discharged from the hospital could still carry the virus deep in their lungs, undetected by conventional testing methods.
This explains a growing number of recovered patients had tested positive again.
A percentage of patients lost their antibodies post-recovery, makes them susceptible to reinfection.
And some patients who recovered from Covid-19 have suffered reduced lung function.
They now experiencing problems such as gasping for air when walking briskly, suggesting organ damage.
These show that recovered patients still suffer some degree of malfunctions in their body and a rehab therapy is needed to help strengthen their lungs.
